ELM MM requests pay-cut
Chamda had apparently been earning R1.4 million at SDM which increased to R2.4 when he moved to ELM which is alleged to be the sum former Municipal Manager Sam Tshabalala was earning behind the highest paid city manager, Jason Ngobeni of the City of Tshwane, at R3-million a year. Tshabalala has since left the ELM.

VANDERBIJLPARK. – As soon as he came into office at the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) in May this year where he was seconded from the Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM) as municipal manager (MM), Yunus Chamda requested a pay cut.
The 2014/15 salaries of almost all of the country’s municipal managers were cited in a response by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) to a parliamentary question from the Democratic Alliance
Speaking to Redi Tlhabi on 702 radio last week, Chamda said that he approached the Remuneration Commission with his request of a decrease as early as June.
His wish was granted recently when his salary was decreased to R1.9 million as the municipal systems do not allow for Chamda to earn less than the ELM COO whoreports state earns R1.8 million. “I’m serving a community of many unemployed people who are living in dire conditions.
“Yes, everybody would like to have more money but there needs to be some sense and balance. You have to lead by example. I should start by making some sacrifices myself,” Chamda said in the interview.
