In a joint statement sent out this afternoon, 8 December 2017, Rand Water and the Emfuleni Local Municipality informed the media of a reduced water supply to the Municipality.

According to the statement:
The crucial work of addressing the municipal debt due by the Emfuleni Local Municipality to Rand Water for water services rendered will commence in earnest on Monday the 11th of December 2017.
This past week Rand Water and the Emfuleni Local Municipality have reached an agreement in which inter alia, Rand Water will reduce the amount of bulk water it supplies to the Municipality. This in effect will allow the Municipality to manage its daily water consumption and in doing so, reduce its monthly account with Rand Water.

The Municipality has also undertaken to make a significant payment to Rand Water during the course of next week in respect of the overdue amount due to Rand Water.
Rand Water and the Emfuleni Local Municipality would like to make the community aware that during this period, they may experience low pressure and intermittent water supply.

Both organisations will now lead a technical task team, that includes local representatives from the health sector, and disaster and emergency management teams. As a priority, the task team will engage consumers in Emfuleni of any consequence that this action may have on communities. The Municipality has as a first action, committed to ensure that contingency plans will be placed to mitigate any such impact on communities.

The task team will also provide further support to the Municipality to advance its water and sanitation programme, and to avert any future debt situation currently being managed by the Municipality.
