SASOLBURG. – NWU Vaal and Sasol slam-dunked another tournament. Hopefully sometime in the near future the youngsters who cut their teeth at the annual Sasol NWU Vanderbijlpark Junior Basketball Tournament will fully comprehend and appreciate the impact the tournament has had on their lives.
The Limpopo Tigers were crowned as the boys champion on Sunday afternoon in the Harry Gwala Multisports Centre in Zamdela. They defeated a spirited NWU Vaal team 44-31 in the final which produced some of the best basketball in many years.
Consistency, teamwork and a clinical execution of their game plan throughout the three-day tournament were the cornerstones of their success.
The Tigers led from start to finish and it was clear from the outset that NWU Vaal would have to produce an exceptional performance to stop the Limpopo Juggernaut.
NWU Vaal edged past Ekhurleni with 41-39 in the girls final. The hosts rose to the occasion and upped their defensive effort in the last quarter to stem the visitor’s onslaught.
As a result NWU Vaal was rewarded with two players Enanthi Petse and Cathlyn Gomwe in the All Star squad. The Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award was scooped by NWU Vaal’s Star Player, Mapule Mwale. In the All Star squad for boys Mandla Sedna made the cut and Limpopo’s Pollen Malungana was honoured with the MVP-award.
