We are aware that there are certain parts of the Emfuleni Local Municipality that are without water. This has been ascribed by some to be as a consequence of the credit control action Rand Water has activated with the Municipality. This is incorrect.
We again confirm that we do have a 10% water flow restriction implemented with the Municipality. The consequence of this action would mean that the Municipality’s Vanderbijlpark Reservoir meter is restricted to a daily flow rate by 10%. The latest observation of our systems indicates that the current actual flow rate from the Rand Water meter to the Vanderbijlpark Reservoir stands at 67.2Ml/day.
This again confirms that any water shortages experienced by end users are not as a consequence of Rand Water’s current credit control action with the Municipality. Furthermore, we have a weekly meter monitoring system with the Municipality and these indicate that there is no compromise to that infrastructure and process.
In June 2018, a technical team with representatives from both Rand Water and the Municipality had determined that the Municipality’s pumps to their pressure tower were not operational.
The pressure tower is responsible for supplying water to the high-lying areas of Emfuleni, and as this was not operating as normal, water supply was not reaching these high-lying areas.
The onus of guaranteeing the integrity of municipal infrastructure is the responsibility of the local authority. The Emfuleni Local Municipality had committed to have their water pumps repaired by Thursday, 28 June 2018.
