DENEYSVILLE. -On Sunday 3rd February the 61st Round-The-Island Yacht Race was sailed at organizing club Lake Deneys Yacht Club (LDYC) on the Vaal Dam. Two courses were raced; the traditional 23 nautical mile Round-The-Island and the much shorter ‘Beat to Beacon Isle’ for much smaller dinghy sailboats.

From the fleet of 205 entries, first across the finish line (line honours) went to a team from LDYC’s sailing “Slumdog”, a Nacra F20. Skippered by Marc Hiles and crew Todd Fisher, the boat finished in 1 hour 59 minutes and 27 seconds. Line honours in the dinghy race went to Skipper Warwick Ham and crew Orpa Ham from Pretoria Sailing Club (PSC), sailing “Kapt’n Blaubaer” a 505 D in 59 minutes and 37 seconds.

The event still holds the Guinness World RecordTM won in 2007 for “Largest number of yachts in an inland race” when 389 sailing craft crossed the finishing line.
