Meeting over sewer spillages – Riverspray

Meeting over sewer spillages - Riverspray

Dear community member,                                                                                                      11 July 2019

We are calling for an urgent community meeting to discuss the ongoing sewer problems in our immediate vicinity, we have met council officials this past week and was informed that pump station 14 is not operational therefore cannot pump through to pump station 16. This is causing sewer spillage into the storm water system which then runs into the servitude inside Riverspray property next to the Varsity boundary fence. Notwithstanding the stench the levels of toxic matter left behind. (monsters were taken today by Prof Johan Tempelhof and his team) They (council) are aware of the spillage and have assured me that the problem would be resolved – to date the problem still is not resolved. (council waiting for approval to hire equipment)

The drive up to Bedworth Park and SE8 has become unbearable, the students walking the streets to both the Varsity and Curio School are exposed to serious health risks so is all the residents at Riverspray.

We want the officials attending to answer the following:

  • When did the pump burn out and why was it left un attended? (Knowing the repercussions)
  • Why are sewer spillages into storm water systems allowed to continue for days on end?
  • Can they resolve immediately or are we to expected to resolve ourselves as a community.
  • Will they just be clearing the blockage or replace the pump? – we want assurance that this will not happen again.
  • Clean up – flushing the system? Making sure no toxins are left behind in the storm water as well as the servitude running through Riverspray.
  • Channel of communication with Emfuleni for immediate assistance going forward.

This meeting is scheduled for Tuesday 16 July 2019 at 11:00 at Riverspray – Slipway Lapa.
