The suspect cannot be identified as he has not yet logded a plea. He was arrested by Police Warrant Officer Freddie Steyn at his home in Roshnee on October 19.
At least seven people, including three minors, lost their lives and five sustained serious injuries.
This happened after a white Toyota Corolla in which a family was travelling collided head-on with a silver BMW M5. The accident happened last year, June 27 on the Old Johannesburg at around 22:00.
The deceaseds are Mohammed Imra (30) driver, his wife Shahzad (28), and their three children, Fatima (9), Haijrah (6), Houria (4) and their neighbour’s daughter, Humera Desai (3). They all died on the scene.
The driver of the BMW and his friend were also admitted at hospital.
The BMW occupants sustained minor injuries. They were later released from the hospital.
At the time, the police were investigating a case of culpable homicide.
An eyewitness suspected that the driver of BMW was under the influence of alcohol. He said the police should have tested him by means of a breathalyser.
The police apprehended him at his home and read him his rights. He was almost in tears when he was handcuffed by the police.
The suspect was taken to the Vereeniging Police holding cells. He is facing seven charges of murder, five counts of attempted murder and one count of reckless driving and driving under the influence. He was released on R20 000 bail until November 5.
The case is being investigated.
