VEREENIGING. – Last week some of the top women’s golfers in the country descended on the Riviera on Vaal Country Club.
The club, situated along the banks of the Vaal River, played host to the South African Women’s Inter- Provincial Championship from Tuesday 24 September to Friday 27 September.
More than 80 female golfers from across South Africa participated in the event, making it one of the largest golf tournaments in the country.
This event included golfers from all ages with the youngest being 14 years old and the oldest being 57 years old.
According to Sally Greasley, President of Women’s Golf South Africa, all of Golf RSA’s 14 unions were represented at the event. This includes golfers from all nine provinces in South Africa.
Although the (at times windy) weather didn’t always play along, Greasley commended the Riviera on Vaal Golf Club for clearing up as much sewage spills (as a result of blocked drains) on the course as they could.
“There were one or two areas where the smell was a bit unpleasant, but one could clearly see that a huge amount of work had been done in preparation for this tournament,” she said.
Greasley said it was exciting to see a lot of young players come through the ranks, thanks to development programmes in their respective unions.
