VEREENIGING. – The community of Three Rivers woke up with a horrible smell on Friday morning after rotten animal remains were discovered
in General Hertzog Road.
According to community members, the remains fell off a truck on Thursday night. An eye witness said that the driver of the truck stopped after
hearing that the remains fell from the truck, but he never bothered to pick them up. Democratic Alliance Ward Councillor, Dalene Venter, said that she received a complaint from the community in the early hours of the morning, alerting her that there were animal carcasses lying in the road with a very bad smell as a result.
On her arrival at the scene, Venter found two carcasses resembling a calve and other animal organs laying in the road. “There was already a lot of traffic when I arrived. I had to seek help of other government departments in order to take care of the situation,” she said.
The Traffic Department of the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) arrived and controlled the traffic with the help of ELM Waste Department members, who conducted a clean-up.
“I later found that the two carcasses of the animals had been seized by members of the community. “Another group came with a box to take the remains of the organs but I chased them away because you can just tell by the smell that it was rotten. I just hope that the community did not take the remainders for their own consumption, because they will get sick.”
