Service lane 20 was identified as an appropriate location for the mayoral visit because it has one of the most problematic lines in Vereeniging. The sewer line in Service Lane 20 is often blocked due to foreign objects disposed in it. The blockages have been going on for three years, with the recent blockage spanning for three months.

“It cannot be that residents and businesses live and operate in such conditions, in the not so distant past, businesses in this part of town were thriving contrary to what we are observing today, they are barely surviving and sewer spillages are among the contributing challenges businesses are facing,” said the Mayor.
“It is critical that we provide our consumers with reliable and effective services as a municipality. This can only be realized through an effective working partnership between Metsi-a-Lekoa, ERWAT and consumers. Only then will this intervention be a success”, Mayor Moerane said.
As planned, the municipality together with ERWAT are advancing with the efforts to contain sewer spillages in Emfuleni over the next two to three years. The ERWAT intervention project started on Sunday the 1st of December 2019 with an initial budget allocation of R141 million by the Gauteng Department of Water and Sanitation. The scope of work will among other activities include sewer network assessment, sewer line maintenance, pump stations upgrade and Waste Water Treatment Works (WWTW) refurbishment.
