VANDERBIJLPARK. – The South African National Blood Services (SANBS) still needs huge amounts of blood and thanks to their new mobile donor centre, it will now be easier and more comfortable to donate blood and save lives.
SANBS introduced its brand new one-of-a-kind mobile donor centre at Vaal Mall in December. Ms Shivanie Lutchman of the SANBS in the Vaal Triangle would like to requests all regular and new donors to donate as soon as possible at their nearest SANBS centre.
“For us to continue to maintain a stable supply of healthy, safe blood and blood products, we are prompted to make our services more accessible to donors, while encouraging people to become regular donors,” says Silungile Mlambo, SANBS Chief Marketing Officer.
Although more blood is needed during peak holiday seasons when there is an increase in traffic, there is a common misconception that most of the blood donated in South Africa goes to accident victims.
According to the SANBS this is not the case:
– 28% is used to treat patients with cancer and aplastic anaemia
– 27% is used during childbirth
– 21% is used for scheduled surgery
– 10% is used for paediatric care
– 6% goes to laboratories
– 6% is used for orthopaedic care
– 4% is used for accident or trauma victims
