SASOLBURG. –  The Sasol marathon, sponsored by Sasol for the 26th time, will take place on 1 February 2020 in Sasolburg. Apart from being a Comrades and Two Oceans qualifier, the marathon will again host the 42.2km Free State Championship.

The 42.2km, 21.1km, and 10km races will start at 06:00 in front of the DP de Villiers Stadium in Sasolburg, while the 4.9km fun run will start at 06:30. Athletes will have 5 hours to complete the 42.2km; 3 hours for the 21.1km; 2 hours for the 10km and 1 hour to finish the fun run. The prize-giving will take place at 10:00 inside the stadium.

All athletes who finish the race for which they entered within the respective cut-off times, will receive a medal. Free State Championship medals will be awarded to the top three winners in the different age categories for the 42.2km marathon.

Although pre-entries have closed, late entries can still be done at the Sasolburg Athletic Club at the DP de Villiers Stadium on Thursday, 30 January from 14:00 – 18:00 and on Friday, 31 January from 10:00 – 18:00. On 1 February, late entries can be done from 04:30 at the DP de Villiers Stadium. Entry fees are R200 for the 42.2km; R160 for the 21.1km; R90 for the 10 km race and R40 for the 4.9km fun run.

Over the years the Sasol Marathon has been popular with runners as it is a fairly flat route, taking runners past the Sasol factory and the Sasolburg Highveld Garden. Once again the water points, placed every 3km along the route, will refresh the athletes and lift their spirits as they portray the seven decades of Sasol’s existence.

According to Zimbini Zwane, Acting Vice President: Corporate Affairs at Sasol’s Sasolburg Operations, Sasol has a long tradition of sponsoring sport in Sasolburg and it remains a privilege for Sasol to have sponsored the Sasol Marathon 26 times. “Events like the Sasol Marathon attracts top national and international athletes to our area and grants our local athletes the opportunity to participate in an event that is splendidly organized by the Sasolburg Athletics Club, supported by Athletics Free State,” she said.

In the interest of the safety of participating athletes and members of the public, road users are advised to take note that the Sasol Marathon will be run in the streets of Sasolburg on 1 February 2020. Road users are urged to adhere to the marshals and traffic officials from the Metsimaholo Local Municipality who will be on duty to direct athletes and minimize impact on motorists. More information on the marathon can be obtained from the Race Office at 078 501 7638 or by sending an email to sasolburgathletics@gmail.com.
