Sasolburg’s serial rapist sentenced to life

ZAMDELA. – A 25-year-old was sentenced to a life imprisonment and 30 years extra for rape in Sasolburg High court after embarking on a raping spree in Zamdela.

Tota Mokoena raped and robbed unsuspecting women.

During the trial it was discovered that on 22nd of November 2017, Tota and his accomplice raped a 19 year old victim who was then 16 years.

“The victim was walking with her friend and her friend’s mother from church when they were approached by two unknown African males, who pointed them with a knife before instructing the three ladies to lie down on the ground. The 16-year-old victim managed to run away and the two suspects pursued her until they catch and raped her. The victim and the two witnesses did not know the suspects,” Colonel Thandi Mbambo said.

The court heard the second incident took place on 15th of June 2018 at about 19:05 in the evening, a 21-year-old victim was with her uncle near extension 17 Walter Sisulu when they were approached by two unknown males. The two started to threaten the victims with a knife and assaulted the uncle and continued to rape the victim. The suspect was unknown to the victim.

According to the statement on the third incident which happened on 2018-07-01 at about 00:10. The victim who was then 15-years-old was walking home from a local park. When she was near the railway station she was approached by an unknown male who pointed her with a knife and assaulted her before raping her. On this incident also the suspect was unknown.

Colonel Thandi Mbambo said the three victims did not know the suspect these three cases were later closed in court. “The investigating officer, Detective sergeant Sophie Kgayane continued with her investigation and linked Tota through DNA. Kgayane left no stone unturned during her investigation. She managed to send Tota in prison where he will never violate women and children again.”
