SPCA is opening a case of animal cruelty against the Manguang Metro

The Bloemfontein SPCA has confiscated five dogs from the Mangaung Metro and is opening a case of animal cruelty against members of the Manguang Metro Municipality Law Enforcement Department and its management in terms of the Animal Protection Act 71 of 1962.

This is following concerns that they were allegedly keeping their five security dogs in old, rusty and broken kennels.

“These dogs suffered with severe musculoskeletal problems as these dogs could barely keep their bodies up with hip problems. It is reported that the dogs should have been retired years ago but never retired. Instead, these dogs stayed in kennels for years,” said Bloemfontein SPCA inspector Charmaine Engelbrecht.

According to the animal rights organization the state of the kennels were shocking.

“The front fences were rusted and broken and concealed by the grass and bushes growing against the enclosures. The cement slabs in between them were cracked and chewed off, which caused a dangerous living environment for the dogs as the cement slabs could fall off and injure them. Inside the kennels, there were asbestos/plastic sleeping kennels. The asbestos ones were broken, while the plastic ones were chewed up, which indicated that the dogs had behaviour problems. The sleeping kennels were full of spiders, spiderwebs, and patches of hair.”

The SPCA obtained a court order to remove the dogs and a vet concluded that the dogs were not fit for work as a result of their neglect. “Consequently, and unfortunately, the dogs had to be humanely euthanised to end their suffering.”
