ArcelorMittal cuts workers’ salaries for “likely” 3 months

As a nationwide three-week lockdown impacts South Africa’s economy, Africa’s biggest steel producer has issued force majeure notices to customers and suppliers “where appropriate.”

ArcelorMittal South Africa (AMSA) also said it has cut salaries for all employees, effective this month, for a “likely” period of three months.

“All staff are working from home except essential staff needed for care and maintenance of the plants, the ArcelorMittal subsidiary, which runs the Vanderbijlpark steel works and Saldanha steel works,” AMSA said in a statement.

“COVID-19 brings unprecedented challenges for everyone and we need to work together as a community to support each other through these challenges. We are proud of the ongoing support and commitment of our employees during this difficult time.”
