A case of reckless and negligent driving was opened after a police van crashed into a security guard and woman in Bloemfontein’s Bayswater shopping centre on Tuesday.

Free State police have confirmed the authenticity of a video of the incident after it was posted on social media on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Brig Sam Makhele said officers received information of the accident at Bayswater shopping centre about 3pm on Tuesday.

On arrival, a police vehicle was found “badly damaged” and a white Mahindra had damage to its front bumper. Makhele said two people were found lying next to the pavement of the parking area of the centre.

“According to eyewitnesses, apparently both were run over by the police vehicle.”

The two, a security guard from Bloemsec and a woman, were transported to hospital in stable condition.

He said the officer and the driver of the Mahindra had no visible injuries.
