Rotational load shedding until transformer is repaired

VANDERBIJLPARK. - Tests on the Bay 3 transformer affected by the Neutral Earthing Compensator (NEC) failure have been concluded. The 20 MVA transformer has been confirmed as faulty after the circuit breakers, isolators and cables caught fire yesterday (Friday, 1 May. The damaged transformer responsible for the power supply in CW 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and parts of NW 7 will not be energized for some time to allow for repairs to be effected.

As an interim measure, the load from the damaged Bay 3 transformer will be moved to the Bay 2 transformer, responsible for supplying Stephanopark, Bonanne, Bophelong and Bophelong Extensions 1 to 18. Technicians are currently running tests on the Bay 2 transformer before putting on the additional load from Bay 3.

Affected consumers are notified that only one transformer will be operating and it will not be able to carry the load of all areas still without power. Technicians will therefore implement rotational load shedding to all affected areas while repairing the damaged transformer (Bay 3).

A detailed load shedding schedule for Stephanopark, Bonanne, Bophelong, CW 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 and parts of NW 7 will be communicated in due time. If all goes according to plan, power supply (rotational load shedding) may be restored tomorrow (Sunday, 3 May).

ELM is pleading for patience from consumers affected by the power outage as the electricity Department is working tirelessly to normalise supply. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Issued by the Communication Department.
