The mayor of KwaDukuza Municipality has spoken out against her crime prevention and traffic officers, who were caught on video pulling a child while seemingly enforcing an alleged lockdown-related infringement on Monday.
While details around the matter are still being investigated to establish the facts, acting mayor Dolly Govender told News24 that she was appalled at what she saw play out in the one minute and 30 second video, which has been circulating on social media.
The video shows two officers walking through the gate of a residential property and grabbing a toddler. The child screams and a male adult, now established as the father, can be seen running towards the officers.
Spokesperson, Sipho Mkhize says the municipality does not condone the behaviour of the personnel.
“KwaDukuza Municipality notes the video making rounds on social media of two of its peace officers who “seem” to be in a scuffle with father and child in the Shakas Rock area in Ballito.
“At the outset, we want to say that we do not condone any form of abuse levelled against our residents particularly women and children,” he said.
Mkhize added: “On Tuesday, 12 May, we will call them in for an enquiry to understand what lead to some of the actions that were seen in the video as well as to understand the whole event.
“We appeal for calm during this time and cooperation in our community, so that we are able to get to the crux of the matter and are able to act in a manner that will be just.”
