VEREENIGING. – Leeuhof residents reporedt no response to repeated complaints about a burst pipe and the resulting flow of untreated water.

A ghastly, “unliveable” stench emanated from that area from a flow that went on for nine months.

A resident said it was still going running on January 14 and that “nothing had happened.”

Leeuhof calls were to the Emfuleni Local council, ELM.

In Vanderbijlpark, ELM effected repairs to a sewerage mains at a Vanderbijlpark high school where faeces overran the rugby and netball field.

Teacher Abrie Botha said he had walked municipal manager Mr Sam Chabalala over the faeces so that the seriousness of the problem could be appreciated.

This pipe has a bursting record that goes back as far as 1984.

Rubbish from repairs as well as the composition of raw sewage – actual pipe content like toilet paper, plastic containers, excrement, etc – were scattered all over.

A related complaint was lodged by local businessman George Vanos but in this case the continuously bursting pipe was for clean water, What was left behind was actual rubble in the form of bricks and paving.

So many complaints have been lodged about bursting pipes and megalitres of clean water flowing unchecked from storm water drains into the Vaal waterway system that it is now impossible to keep track.
