Sod-turned for ‘Serope se a benya’ housing project

The community will be given title deeds and stands to avoid delays once services are in place. Mashatile said the project was supposed to have started in 2013: “I am taking responsibility to make sure Boiketlong develops without any hiccups.

SEBOKENG. – The unveiling of the R1 billion Boiketlong Mega Mix Development Project and the sod-turning conducted by Gauteng Human Settlements MEC Paul Mashatile on Sunday has brought relief to residents.

Aiming to stop the ongoing marathon protests, Mashatile appealed to the community to work together with the government, project managers and steering committee.

He was joined by Exective Emfuleni Local Municipality Mayor Simon Mofokeng, Emfuleni and Sedibeng District Municipality Housing MMCs Sello Pitso and Velly Mcera, respectively.

The sod-turning was witnessed by hundreds of long-waiting residents in Boiketlong commonly known as ‘Serope se a benya.’

A billion rand mixed Mega Project revealed will kick-start with at least 12 000 houses. The first phase with a budget of R24 million will see the building of 2600 RDPs, 400 Flepsite, 500 Bonds, and 500 rental houses. Mashatile said the processing of beneficiaries and administration needs to be done as soon as possible.

The community will be given title deeds and stands to avoid delays once services are in place. Mashatile said the project was supposed to have started in 2013: “I am taking responsibility to make sure Boiketlong develops without any hiccups.

“We want people to live better lives and in proper conditions. “It can’t take another 22 years for things to improve. Our five-year contract with the developers has to bear fruit,” he said. Lesiba Sekele, head of Sedibeng District Housing, has been mandated to work with the Community Liaison Officer and Steering Committee. The community must get monthly feedback on how far the projects are.

“Boiketlong from today will never be the same. “We are taking you to the Promised Land. A promise made is a promise kept,” said Mashatile.

Immediately after the unveiling, all the roads which were barricaded during protests were cleared and opened by the residents for the free flow of traffic.
