Pensioner (114) dies waiting for house
The late Elda Mazongolo (114) passed away on May 26 after a long illness. Mzongol is survived by two children, ten grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. She was laid to rest at the Vanderbijlpark Cemetery on Sunday. Mzongolo will be remembered as one of the people paraded and promised an RDP house at Savanna City by former Human Settlements MEC Jacob Mamabolo.
BOIKETLONG. – Hundreds of bereaved community members gathered to pay their last respects to one of the oldest women in the region.
The late Elda Mazongolo (114) passed away on May 26 after a long illness. Mzongol is survived by two children, ten grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. She was laid to rest at the Vanderbijlpark Cemetery on Sunday. Mzongolo will be remembered as one of the people paraded and promised an RDP house at Savanna City by former Human Settlements MEC Jacob Mamabolo.
Her name was cited among the first four beneficiaries from Boiketlong Informal Settlement. She attended the event on November 15 last year.
According to her granddaughter, Bongiwe Motaung, the granny was under the impression that her dream had come true.
She died waiting for the house.The deceased never set foot in her promised house.
“We hear people claiming victory for houses.
Our granny is no more. We wonder who will benefit from her ‘ghost’ house?” asked Motaung.
Mamabolo had said elderly beneficiaries would be prioritised, followed by the disabled, child-headed families and women-headed families.
These peoplewould soon be receiving their brand new houses in Savanna City. Mamabolo mentioned that the Savanna City Project would produce 18 000 units made up of integrated housing, including low-cost housing, bond units and RDP houses. Sadly for Mzongolo it was just a dream.
