VEREENIGING. – This is Max and his family. Max was given to Christina by a Madam that didn’t want him anymore. He was just a puppy and he arrived at the stables in Christina’s arms with a towel wrapped over his eyes.
I was hopping mad when she brought the cowering little body home thinking that it was a recipe for disaster with all the horses around and no boundary fence. I was also totally pissed off by the woman that discarded the dog like it was used toilet paper.
I sat Alex and Christina down and in my best teachers voice I explained the perils of taking on a dog. Throughout my lecture I just saw bobbing heads and smiling faces and I knew I had lost the battle.
The first week of Maxi’s stay was in one of the boarding kennels on the farm. We decided it would be the best to keep him enclosed whilst getting to know his surroundings and new mom & dad. Whenever I arrived at the stables Christina would be sitting on the floor of the kennel speaking and stroking Max. It didn’t take long for the mutual devotion to grow and soon Max was sleeping in the room with them.
When Max was 6 months old we took him for his neutering and Alex went with, clucking like a mother hen. When we went to the sea, Maxi went to stay at the boarding kennels.
When you arrive at the stables you look for Max and you will find Alex. When Cintola ( Briony’s new horse) arrived and went into the paddock for the first time Alex and Max sat on a huge boulder together watching the stallion the whole time.
Max went missing between 6 and 7 pm last night. We have left no stone unturned. Alex has done the rounds, I have driven everywhere, contacted everybody I know and even stormed into two shebeens offering a reward for Maxi.
The worst thing for me was watching Akex cry this morning, wringing his hat in his hands. I feel like I have lost one of my own.
