Tshwane metro reminds residents to use water sparingly

Cape Town and the Western Cape are busy recovering from an extremely harsh drought over the past few years, and Gauteng might find itself in a similar situation should caution not be applied by residents.

When it comes to saving water and adhering to water restrictions, no city or municipality can do a thing without buy-in from residents sticking to regulations. There are numerous ways to save water at home that will make a real difference to usage numbers. Here are some tips to help Tshwane households decrease their water usage:

  1. Use grey water for watering gardens and flushing toilets. A simple way to get into the habit is to have a bucket in the shower and use that to flush your toilets
  2. Don’t wait for someone else to report leaks or burst pipes. Find relevant contact numbers on the Tshwane Municipal website
  3. Install water saving devices
  4. ONLY water your garden before 06:00 or after 18:00, and ONLY when necessary
  5. Use a broom instead of a hose to clean your driveway or porches
  6. Collect as much rainwater for using around the house as possible
  7. Cover up your swimming pool to reduce the water’s evaporation
  8. Shower quickly, and instead of having a bath. Showering and bathing can account for more than 20% of water consumption at home. A standard shower head uses between 15 and 25 litres per minute while a  water efficient shower head uses between 6 and 8 litres per minute.
  9. Close the tap while brushing your teeth
