The Vaal racecourse was abuzz on Saturday when horseracing fans came from far and wide to experience a day filled with fun activities, music, good food and exciting horse racing.
The event was the R1 million Supreme Cup, sponsored by SAP.
Mike Azzie and JP van der Merwe were the toast of the festive crowd as they scored a meeting treble. This included the big one, the Gr 2 R1 million Supreme Cup over 1 450m. The victorious horse was the four-year-old Judpot gelding Deputy Jud.
Ultimate Dollar led early but soon gave way to Lavender Landscape with Solar Triptych, Precursor and Toro Rosso all handy. Jockey JP van der Merwe had Deputy Jud just off the front rank.
Ultimate Dollar led briefly about 500m out but Deputy Jud was already at his girth and closing. The Azzie runner took command 300m from the line. Uncle Tommy, runner-up last year, quickened up well over the final 200m but could do no more than reduce Deputy Jud’s winning margin to 2.25 lengths.
The crowd were in their element due to the racing, the fine fare, including another well received prawn festival, live entertainment and a craft market. The day was capped by a thrilling R20 000 Grooms race before everybody settled down to watch the Boks playing Samoa in the Rugby World Cup on the big screens.
* MooiVaal Media would like to thank everybody who took part in the morning’s fun run or bought raffle tickets in aid of Cansa. A big thank you also to our sponsors, such as Mr Jaco Killian of Sunrise Trailers, who sponsored the main raffle prize – a trailer worth R15 000, which was won by Ms Simone Bezuidenhout.
