River Rehabilitation Project will create jobs – Minister

SEBOKENG. – The Minister for Defence and Military Veterans, Nosiviwe Mapisa- Nqakula and Minister Gugile Nkwinti recently brought joy to unemployed youth in the area.The pair said that 2 000 youths are going to benefit from the Vaal River Rehabilitation Project. This was during a media briefing on the report-back of the Vaal River Rehabilitation Project, hosted at the Saul Tsotetsi Sports Complex on Friday.
Mapisa-Nqakula said, “There’s a good story to tell. The spillage that affects the community in the Vaal affects everyone, including neighbouring Provinces.” She said that the recent engagement of the army did not necessarily mean they were capable in everything and that the reality is that the army has not been trained to do the work of the Police. They do not have necessary capability to do something out of their expertise.

The minister said it was high time to engage the community through learning skills to help keep the Vaal River clean. Minister Nkwinti was applauded when he said about R341 million had been Focus on Vaal Sewage Crises made available from his office: “With this money we will make sure that the local community, especially 2 000 youths, are going to benefit through the work project established. “The youth will be trained during the process by the army. After the period of the army has lapsed, the disciplined youth will have to take over to carry on with the work,” said Nkwinti. The youth will serve in all 44 pump stations. The minister said other money will be coming from various government departments. He estimated the money to be R1,2 billion after collection. The ministers were accompanied by the two Executive Mayors of Sedibeng District and Emfuleni Local Municipality, the Deputy Minister of CoGTA, Obet Bapela, and Gauteng Minister of CoGTA, Uhuru Moiloa.
