MEYERTON. – Johan Grant (53) recently exceeded his expectations when he finished 10th in his first Washie 100 miler marathon which took place in the Eastern Cape.
Grant has been a runner for 32 years and has taken part in multiple prominent races during his career. Grant is a member of the Midvaal Athletics Club. “I have a passion for running. I have taken part in 32 Two Oceans marathons and 32 Comrades marathons.”
Speaking about his preparation for the Marathon, Grant said that it took him 12 months to prepare for the 100 miler as it is more intense than the other marathons
“Last year a friend of mine who was taking part in the Washie asked me to join him. I declined because I realised that it takes being ready both physically and mentally to run this race.
“This year I started preparations early and this is why I was able to do so well. It took me a year to prepare for this race.”
Grant said that he did not expect to do as well, as he did as this was his first one.
“I would like to thank everyone who supported me during the race. More especially my wife who was there with me every step of the way and my friend Deon Marais for being my second and helping me finish the race.”
Grant said that if the opportunity ever arises he will most definitely run the Washie again.
His wife Dana says that running is the one thing that Johan is passionate about.
“I am proud that he was able to do so well. He is not like other people.
It’s like he gets more energetic after finishing the race. We are all very proud of his achievement.”
