In 1948, in Vanderbijlpark’s founding days, a nursery school called Teddy Bear Pre-Primary School opened its doors for the first time. It was established in a house renovated to become a school at 61 Rutherford Boulevard, CW 2. Not only was it the first nursery school in town, it was
also the first and only English Nursery school available.
“Children were brought from all over town to attend the school. The school provided a good education as all the teachers were qualified and under
the wing of the Department of Education. Regular visits by inspectors made sure that the education provided was up to standard. Throughout the years many of the children returned with their offspring. Even the grandparents would visit the school to take a trip down memory lane. Today we are
very proud when we hear about students becoming doctors, lawyers, vets and other successful adults,” says Ebie Human, the schools’ principal.
Teddy Bear currently accommodates children from 2 to 6 years of age and the school still provides the local primary schools with confident and well prepared Grade R pupils.
Qualified staff provide a good education and to teach young children to speak English is one of the school’s main priorities. Children can now attend school from 07:00 to 17:00 and are provided with a meal, a snack and fun activities during the afternoons. “They are also welcome to come to school during school holidays.”
Throughout the years Teddy Bear saw many changes. Not only in staff, but also in the utilisation of our building and playground. But one thing
did not change: The children at Teddy Bear are happy, cared for and well educated kids. The teachers are loyal and committed and what more do you want when you are still small,” says Ms Human. For more information, contact the nursery school on (016) 933 2261.
