Emfuleni sends exorbitant truck contractor packing

At least 15 compactor trucks from Kwa-Zulu Natal were sent packing after the owner demanded an increase amount of money from the Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM). This is after the truck owner wanted to twist the arm of the ELM to change certain clauses in the contract.

The Executive Mayor, Councillor Gift Moerane, said he refused to be pressured into making some changes to certain items that would fit the needs of the contractor.

‘I refused to be held hostage so they get the job through the barrel of a gun.’

‘If there’s a fight,’ said the Mayor, ‘I am ready to take them head on. ’Together with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and the Municipal Manager (MM), are coming up with amicable solution on how to hire local truck owners.’

‘Every local business has to be treated equally hence there’s a stalemate in Emfuleni.’ The mayor assured residents that once they reach an agreement with his management, people will start to see some change.

‘We must get the court order to close scrap yards.’ The mayor appealed to the community to be the vanguard of the area. Every day electric cables, green boxes and transformers are being stolen and vandalized. This is crippling Emfuleni to a tune of millions of rand for replacement, he said.
