VANDERBIJLPARK. – Two suspects were arrested on Monday for intimidation, damage to police property, damage to business property and an unauthorised march.
This happened after police searched alleged foreign nationals at Vaal Mall. Police say they were conducting a random stop-and-search operation triggered by a tip-off.
Hell broke loose when the two men allegedly called their friends to assist them. They blocked a police vehicle and damaged the radio. Police spokesperson Sergeant Gertrude Makhale says that by the time they broke the radio, back-up had already been contacted.

Quick response resulted in the rescue of the police officers. A warning shot has apparently been fired. Police thought it was all over, but some 30 alleged foreign nationals mobilised themselves and marched to the Vanderbijlpark Police Station where they wanted to voice their grievances.
Police responded further by beefing themselves up with backup from the Flying Squad, K9, TNT (Amabherete), and other police units. These made their way to the Vanderbijlpark Police Station in reaction to the rumour that there was a shootout between Police and foreign nationals. Makhale says there was no shootout at the scene: “We arrested two of the outstanding suspects among the group. There was no shootout between the suspects and the police. The suspects were arrested for defeating the ends of justice, damage to police property, damage to business property, an unauthorised march and intimidation.” Police are still looking for other suspects, however: “Police could not arrest people at the march for just being in it.” Vaalweekblad could not get hold of the group leaders and their views on the matter.
