Community burns tent ahead of SOMA

RUST-TER-VAAL. –  Rus-Ter-Vaal residents have burned a part of the marquee where the State of the Municipality Adress (SOMA) was to be held.

 Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) Mayor Simon Mofokeng was due to adress the residents of Emfuleni at the Rus-Ter-Vaal Stadium in Vereeniging at 15:30.”
The incident is said to have occured last night. The residents say that their actions are a result of the lack of service delivery in the area. “The municipality only knows us during SOMA and close to election time,” they said.
The residents also vented their anger by vandalising the tables and chairs that were already set up.

ELM’s Mayoral Sokesperson Lebo Mofokeng says, “We would like to inform our communities and members of the media about the unfortunate postponement of the 2016 SOMA.

“This follows the vandalism overnight of the marquee which was set up to host the event. We apologise to our residents and stakeholders for the inconvenience.” Mofokeng concludes.
