VEREENIGING. The silence of the nationwide lockdown was broken on Friday afternoon when helicopters carrying much needed food relief touched down near a hall in Risiville.

The Lions Club of Vereeniging joined hands with the Acorn Foundation and helicopter pilots from the Covid Flight Mission to provide people in the Vaal Triangle with food during the nationwide lockdown.

On Friday various food items, which included maize, bread, salt, sugar, oil and soya was delivered to a community hall in Risiville, from where it was distrubuted to various areas including Riversdale, Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging, Mooilande, Sonlandpark, Leeuhof and Peacehaven.

Organisations such as Eagle Wings, Doulos Ministries, Sukasambe, 50 Shades were also assisted.

Later two helicopters carrying additional supplies of maize, oil, flour, yeast, dehydrated vegtables, soap and suppliments also touched down near the hall adding to the tally of food that had been collected.

Menno Pasons, a businessman and helicopter pilot, as well as other members from the Covid Flight mission has since the beginning of nationwide lockdown been flying to areas accross South Africa to get food relief to communities and has now also reached out to people in the Vaal Triangle.

According to Elsa van Heerden, a friend of the Lions Club of Vereeniging who organised the project, the idea was obtaining and distributing a weeks supply if food for more than 300 people in the Vaal Triangle. “It is unbelievable how many people in the Vaal Triangle are suffering and need help,” she says.
